Football For Change Campaign: One year on…

During the first UK lockdown, Plan teamed up with our Foundation team to set children in the UK the challenge of creating their own footballs out of recycled material.

Former Chelsea Women captain Katie Chapman also took part in The Extra Time challenge, which demonstrated how children in communities across the world can find ways to play the game they love, and how footballs and equipment donated through Football for Change, helps children play, learn and thrive.

Head of the Chelsea Foundation Simon Taylor said: ‘We’ve been working with our charity partner Plan International for over six years now and our Football for Change campaign demonstrates how the power of football can be used to motive, educate and inspire.

‘Together with Plan and the incredible support from our fans, we’ve been able to give more children the opportunity to play and to learn.

‘We are looking forward to continuing this campaign and giving more children, in some of the most vulnerable communities around the world, the chance to enjoy their childhood.’

Chief Executive of Plan International UK, Rose Caldwell said: ‘I visited Ethiopia’s Gambella refugee camps in January 2020, where over 300,000 people – 65% of whom are children – live after fleeing the civil war in South Sudan.

‘Education services in the camps are severely strained, with serious shortages of school materials, spaces and qualified teachers available for refugee children.

‘Walking into the camps, it was heartening to see that – in the midst of one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world – support from Chelsea fans means that together we are working hard to ensure that children can stay safe, return to education and enjoy a brighter future.

‘Thank you so much for your support.’
