Reflecting on his pathway starting in English football’s fourth tier, Cumming said recently: ‘I think this is a path most goalkeepers have taken.

‘Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson, for instance, played non-league football and in the lower leagues, and are now playing for England.

‘It’s something you have to do as a young goalkeeper because it’s not the same as an outfield player where you can jump straight into the first team.’

Cumming’s fellow Academy graduate and goalkeeper, Nathan Baxter, missed Accrington Stanley’s weekend game against Peterborough United with a shoulder injury, though Jon Russell did feature as a first-half substitute. Accy lost 7-0 to promotion-chasing Peterborough, leaving them four points adrift of the play-off positions in League One.

In the same division, Luke McCormick was involved throughout in both of Bristol Rovers’ fixtures as the Gas suffered back-to-back 1-0 defeats against Swindon Town and Sunderland. Joey Barton’s side are now two points from safety with eight games remaining.
