Chelsea’s dynamic duos

Half of Kai Havertz and Callum Hudson-Odoi’s six league goals in 2020/21 have come from the two combining. That includes Hudson-Odoi’s smart pass to set up Havertz’s early opener in the 4-1 win at Crystal Palace last month, and Havertz returning the favour by providing the assist for both Hudson-Odoi’s Premier League goals this season, against Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion. Even more impressively, they achieved that despite only spending 518 minutes on the pitch together, less than a third of the time it took Mount and Zouma.

Other than that, it seems secret to a winning combination is to partner with Timo Werner, as the German forward has created or scored two goals in partnership with each of Tammy Abraham, Ben Chilwell, Havertz and Mount during his first Premier League campaign.

It is the duo of Werner and Mount which is by far the most profitable when it comes to creating chances, though, with 26 of their combinations ending with a shot in the league, 12 more than the next highest pairing at Chelsea, Mount and Christian Pulisic. Mount’s role in creating chances is crystal clear from the fact he is included in all of our five most frequent combinations ending in a shot, with Havertz, Reece James and Zouma his other partners.
