Chelsea Women v VFL Wolfsburg Champions League preview: Kick-off time and how to follow

The form

The Blues last played at Kingsmeadow on Saturday, recording a third consecutive league victory with a 3-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion. Goals came from Guro Reiten, Sam Kerr and Bethany England, who once again made an impact just minutes after coming onto the pitch.

Emma Hayes’s side will head into this Champions League campaign looking to go one step further than last season’s 4-0 final defeat and lift the trophy this year.

Wolfsburg are previous winners of this competition, lifting the trophy in consecutive 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons, while also being three time runners-up in 2016, 2018 and 2020. Last year they were knocked out by Chelsea in the quarter-finals.

This season, the She-Wolves qualified for Champions League by defeating Bordeaux in qualifying via a penalty shootout.

Wolfsburg drew their last league match 2-2 to struggling Freiburg last weekend. Prior to this they enjoyed two straight wins against Duisburg and Sand.

Chelsea v Wolfsburg head-to-head record

This will be the fifth meeting for the two teams in the Champions League. Last year, the Blues were victorious against Wolfsburg with a 5-1 win on aggregate.

Chelsea edged the first leg in Budapest, winning 2-1 against Wolfsburg in what was our first ever victory over the German side. Hayes’s Blues saw the tie out at Kingsmeadow by winning 3-0 and reaching the semi-final.

Prior to last year, Chelsea have been knocked out of the European competition by the She-Wolves on three previous occasions. Wolfsburg defeated the Blues 4-1 on aggregate at the round of 16 stage in 2015/16 season and then, a year later, we met at the round of 32 and were defeated by the same scoreline. We were also edged out by the German side in the semi-finals in 2017/18, losing 5-1 over the two legs.

Next up for the Blues

Up next after Wolfsburg, the Blues will return to Kingsmeadow to host Leicester City Women. The match takes place on Sunday 10 October with a 12:30pm (UK) kick-off.
