Given the events in Moscow four years earlier, it’s fair to say there were plenty of nervous faces in the crowd at the Allianz Arena when our next appearance in the Champions League final also went to penalties.

With the spot kicks against Bayern Munich taken at the end holding their supporters in their own stadium, the pressure on the Chelsea players couldn’t have been higher, but it was the Blues who held their nerve. In the reverse of Moscow, we were the ones who started on the back foot after Juan Mata’s miss, but the rest of our takers proved fearless as two club legends emerged as fitting heroes.

Cech saved twice in the shoot-out, from Ivica Olic and Bastian Schweinsteiger, in addition to saving a penalty by former Chelsea team-mate Arjen Robben during extra-time, becoming Bayern’s nemesis on the night.

With David Luiz, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole all finding the net, that left the decisive moment in the hands of Didier Drogba, who wasn’t involved in the shoot-out in Moscow after being sent off. Of course, he tucked his spot-kick away in the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations on and off the pitch from those wearing Blue as we were finally crowned champions of Europe.
